Government Identification

Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers require a REAL ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.

RMV Navigation

  • Over 40 RMV services are available through the Online Service Center or at AAA locations by appointment.
  • If your driver’s license, learner’s permit, or ID has expired, you must renew it. Driving without a license – including an expired, suspended, or revoked license – is a criminal offense in Massachusetts. Online renewal through the RMV Online Service Center may be available to people who are eligible.
  • Transactions that cannot be completed on the RMV website may require an appointment. Appointments can be made on the RMV website or check the website to see what transactions can be performed without an appointment.
  • Translated RMV documents are available in various languages.

Work and Family Mobility Act

  • Under the Work and Family Mobility Act, eligible Massachusetts residents will be able to obtain a Standard (Class D or M) drivers’ license, regardless of immigration status starting July 2023.

Real IDs

  • Beginning May 7, 2025, people 18 years old and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID to fly anywhere within the US. Here is information about updating driver’s licenses or state IDs. Passports are REAL ID-compliant.

Seniors

  • Massachusetts law requires drivers who are 75 or older to renew drivers’ licenses in person.
  • Visit mass.gov for older driver resources and safe driving workshops.
