July/August 2024 Updates

MLPB’s Summer Staff Outing

Eva
MLPB’s staff took a much deserved break on a recent Wednesday in July. We met up at Puttshack in the Seaport for a few rounds of minigolf, followed by a lunch near the water. It was great to connect, and we learned who had some secret putting skills (that would be our Admin & Finance Manager Meg Baker!)

Latest BMC Advocacy Bootcamp
Eva
We held the latest in our Advocacy Bootcamp series for Boston Medical Center’s Pediatrics residents on July 22. MLPB’s Law & Policy Consultants Nedhi Teixeira and Kate Gannon trained pediatrics residents on legal basics including housing law, immigration law and income maximization. We love being able to talk to doctors at the start of their careers about the intersection of law and health

ICYMI: Read MLPB’s Report on Aging and Health-Related Social Needs

MLPB
With support from BCBSRI and CTC-RI, MLPB has published a report of learnings from our Aging and Health-Related Social Needs (HRSN) Learning-and-Action Lab, focused on improving clinic-based HRSN screening, referral, and problem-solving strategies impacting older Rhode Islanders. The report synthesizes two years of learning, and gives concrete recommendations to help medical practices serving older adults create meaningful and respectful tools to screen their patients for negative social drivers of health.

New guidelines for Emergency Assistance shelter went into place on August 1. These include new priority categories for shelter placement, and severe new limitations for families without priority. Families determined not to have a priority will now be able to stay in respite facilities generally for no more than 5 days. For more about these significant changes, many of which may adversely impact health, go to MLPB’s Massachusetts Digital Digest.

Care planning, delivery and financing should systemically account for people’s legal rights, risks, and remedies. MLPB equips communities of care with legal education and problem-solving insight that fosters preventions, health equity, and human-centered system change. Through training, consultation and technical assistance, we help teams and organizations better connect people to the resources and legal protections they seek.
MLPB is a fiscally sponsored organization of TSNE.
