March 2024 Updates – Read our new blog post, legal updates, and more!

On March 11, MLPB Law & Policy Consultants Sarah Yan and Kate Gannon delivered our Advocacy Bootcamp for a group of pediatric residents from Boston Medical Center. The three hour training focused on immigration, housing and access to benefits, and it was a lively discussion. It is heartening to see the residents embracing social care problem-solving as integral to their goals of delivering quality health care.

For the post, Executive Director Amy Copperman interviewed Jalyn Alzate, a DULCE Family Specialist, who speaks enthusiastically about her experiences launching the program. Jalyn’s expertise and passion for this work highlights just how transformative this model can be.

In other Rhode Island news, MLPB is excited to announce the launch of a new partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Health Office of Family Visiting. Through this partnership, MLPB Law & Policy Director Jeannine Casselman will be supporting four programs across the state: First Connections, Healthy Families America, Nurse-Family Partnership, and Parents as Teachers.

Jeannine will embed at three implementing agencies: Comprehensive Community Action Program, Family Service of Rhode Island, and Connecting for Children & Families. We will be drawing on nearly nine years of experience providing legal-problem solving support to The Children’s Trust and Healthy Families Massachusetts. We can’t wait to get started!

This month Desiree James, a 1L, and Khalifa Al-Ghanim, a 3L, spent their Alternative Spring Break with MLPB. They jumped in to attend trainings, observe team meetings, and complete some critical research for us. We are grateful they chose to donate their time to MLPB!

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a benefit that helps pay for internet service, is ending. Due to the lack of federal funding, the last fully funded month will be April 2024. Care teams can direct people to another federal benefit called Lifeline. This program provides discounted phone and internet service to eligible households.
