Transportation Needs

RIPTA expanded its pilot service, Flex on Demand, to include five more towns and cities.

  • RIPTA’s Flex on Demand pilot now includes Coventry, Newport, Middletown, West Warwick and Westerly. The pilot is an “on-demand” service for transit in “Flex zones” and includes curb-to-curb transportation.
  • RIPTA’s “Bus Buddy” is a free optional service to help new riders navigate the bus system.
  • A new law requires adults to wait at least 30 days after getting their learner’s permit before taking the road test to get their full license.
  • The Blue Envelope Initiative is a program geared at easing the communication issues that sometimes arise between law enforcement and drivers on the autism spectrum. A blue envelope holds a driver’s license, vehicle registration, insurance card, and emergency contact card. Blue envelopes are available at the DMV or AAA. All New England states, with the exception of New Hampshire, have a similar program.
  • RIPTA service changes.
  • RIPTA’s Flex on Demand service allows South County riders to request rides through a smartphone app.
  • The RIde Paratransit Program is available to people with disabilities who are unable to use the bus, but who live near a bus line.
  • RIPTA offers a reduced fare bus pass program for low-income seniors (age 65+) and low-income people with disabilities.
  • Military veterans who need transportation support are encouraged to contact the Rhode Island Office of Veterans Services (RIVETS). 
  • MTM, the state vendor for NEMT for Medicaid patients, provides transportation for essential medical appointments.
    • RIPIN can also offer support for NEMT-related questions.
    • MTM continues to offer reimbursements for caregivers providing transportation for Medicaid patients.
